Sinus is quite a common ailment. The most effective treatment prescribed is operation, though milder conditions can be treated with antibiotics. People affected with the condition experience difficulty in breathing and suffer headaches in mild and severe intensity. Virus infection is treated with pain and fever medication, decongestants and Mucolytics. Bacterial infection however requires antibiotic treatment. Such infection is suspected when mucus discharge, headache, and other symptoms persist for more than a week.  The antibiotic prescribed inhibits the bacteria' ability to create cell wall. The bacteria therefore burst out and die. In more severe cases, drainage of the sinus may be carried out though that is done in extreme cases.

The sinus infection antibiotic that is prescribed depends on the type of bacterial infection caused. The most common bacteria known to cause the infection are (i) Streptococcus pneumoniae, (2) Moraxella catarrhalis (3) Haemophilus influenzae (4) Streptococcus pyogenes and (5) Staphylococcus aureus. Penicillin is used to treat bacteria induced sinusitis. Amoxicillin or Amoxil and amoxicillin-clavulanate or Augmentin are usually found to be effective against all strains of bacteria known to cause sinusitis.  

In case of allergy to penicillin, other sinus infection antibiotic drugs used are Ceclor, Lorabid, Biaxin, Zithromax, Gantanol, Bactrim Septra besides others. Usually the treatment lasts 10-14 days. In case of severe infections it could be extended to 14-21 days, depending on the severity of the infection.  Sinus could also be caused due to allergy from pollens, or other environmental factors. In such cases, extreme treatment such as drainage through surgery is not prescribed.

Macrolids are popular narrow spectrum bacteria. They work by inhibiting the bacteria's ability to produce proteins. Antibodies produced by the body are then enough to kill the bacteria. Erythromycin and Clarithromycin are the popular macrolides prescibed by ENT specialists.

Apart from the treatment that's absolutely vital it is advisable to take some precautions which could help keep trouble at bay. Reduce vulnerability by keeping on your warm clothes on cold days, even if others are casual about it. Avoid dusty environment. Take extra care of cleanliness at home. Use a vacuum cleaner, always. Oil water and inhale the warm air to help reduce congestion and keep cold at bay. Cover you head with a towel while inhaling warm air. Sinus infection antibiotics are effective remedy, though prevention is better than cure.

Paranasal sinus inflammation is known as sinusitis. Sinus is a hollow cavity which is filled with air. Sinusitis is generally caused due to allergy, infection and some autoimmune causes. In most of the sinusitis cases it is caused by virus and takes about 10 days to cure. Sinusitis is very common problem and about 24 million cases are reported every year in United States. Bacterial sinusitis persists for longer duration than viral sinusitis and requires sinus infection antibiotics for treatment. Chronic sinusitis generally lasts longer than three months. Nasal congestion, headache, facial pain and night time coughing are some of common symptoms of chronic sinusitis. Other symptoms include minor or controlled asthma, thick yellow or green discharge, general malaise, dizziness and aching teeth. Insomnia is generally caused after chronic sinusitis which is referred as reduced sense of smelling. Sinusitis can also be classified on the basis of location. Sinusitis is known as maxillary when there is pain in the maxillary region that is cheek region. It is characterized by toothache. Sphenoid sinusitis leads to pain in back of eye or in top of head.

In patients who are allergic to penicillin cefaclor, azithromycin and other antibiotics are used as first choice for treating sinusitis infection. Antibiotics should be used randomly as bacteria develop resistance against antibiotic when used for longer durations. Augmentin is the preferred medication for treatment of chronic sinusitis. Antihistamines are used for treating allergic sinusitis. Nasal steroidal sprays are helpful in reducing nasal inflammation.
